We are delighted that Dr Christopher Dougherty has joined the Centre for the Study of Philanthropy & Public Good (CSPPG) on a prestigious Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Postdoctoral Fellowship. The Fellowship, valued at CAD$140,000 over two years, will support Dr Dougherty’s research on “The political expressiveness of charitable sectors in comparative perspective: Canada and its provinces and the UK and its countries”.

Project details

Building on Dr Dougherty’s SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship research, completed at the School of Public Policy and Administration at Carleton University in Canada, and working with Professor Tobias Jung at the University of St Andrews Business School’s Department of Management, the project will examine the role of charity as a vehicle for policy engagement by political actors and social elites in Canada and the UK. It will inform debates on:
– the role of wealthy donors in national politics,
– the ‘shrinking space’ for civil society organizations (like charities) in the UK and internationally,
– which spaces for civil society are shrinking under what political pressures,
– what causes that are afforded stable (or expanding) space for charities to pursue their work and engage with policy processes even while the overall space for charities shrinks.

Significance of the Fellowship

Designed to support the most promising Canadian new scholars in the social sciences and humanities, SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships play a crucial role in helping recipients establish a research base at a critical time in their careers.

The Centre for the Study of Philanthropy & Public Good looks forward to the valuable insights and contributions Dr. Dougherty’s research will bring to the field of philanthropy studies and public policy nationally and internationally.
