PhD studentship on ‘Philanthropic Foundations and Engaged Philanthropy’
The Centre for the Study of Philanthropy & Public Good is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD studentship (EU/UK fees plus stipend at RCUK level) on the theme of ‘Philanthropic Foundations and Engaged Philanthropy’, co-funded by The Rank Foundation and the University of St Andrews.
Project outline
With a growing interest in more engaged philanthropy amongst foundations, this PhD project will (a) map and examine different approaches to, practices of, and visions for engaged philanthropy by foundations, (b) identify the opportunities for, challenges with and lessons on engaged philanthropy, and (c) provide guidance to, and recommendations for, foundations and other stakeholders interested in engaged philanthropy.
The PhD student’s work programme will include desk-based research and fieldwork. The desk-based research will (i) review and synthesise academic and non-academic publications on engaged philanthropy, and (ii) map and examine different ideas and models used and advocated by foundations. The subsequent fieldwork will critically examine the insights from the review and explore perspectives on, opportunities for, and challenges of, engaged philanthropy with selected foundations and grantees.
Taken together, this work will provide a unique internationally-relevant knowledge-base on engaged philanthropy. Alongside the student’s PhD, outputs from the work will include: a readily available and freely accessible online portal on engaged philanthropy, including an online ‘storymap’ that provides the history and examples of engaged philanthropy practices; summary and overview documents and guidance on key issues relating to engaged philanthropy for practice and policy; review papers in leading international academic journals and relevant professional magazines; conference presentations and knowledge-exchange activities at UK and international levels for academic and non-academic audiences.
