The New Nordic Wealth Elites and the Future of the Welfare Model

In this talk, Dr Laura Tarkiainen from Tampere University will present findings from the research project “Keeping New Money on Board: The New Nordic Wealth Elites and the Future of the Welfare Model”. The project explores how new wealth elites in the Nordic region perceive, support, or challenge the welfare state, and examines the institutions and practices surrounding their wealth.
Laura will share key insights from media representations of and interviews (N= 22) with new emerging wealth elite group in Finland, particularly welfare profit-makers, those who have accrued wealth through the for-profit health and social care sector.
The presentation sheds light on how these elites justify their role as wealthy individuals and relate to the Nordic welfare model and the implications for its future.
