SUMMARY:Foundations’ and Grantees’ Perspectives as Two Sides of the Same Coin? Explaining Differing Interpretations of Foundations’ Roles through an Epistemic Injustice Lens\, Talk by Antonia Muhr\, WU Vienna
DESCRIPTION:While debates on the roles of foundations are ongoing\, there is little empirical data on how these roles are actually lived by foundations\, or on how they are experienced in practice by actors most affected by foundations’ activities – their grantees. This ongoing research addresses this knowledge gap and explores While debates on the roles of foundations are ongoing\, there is little empirical data on how these roles are actually lived by foundations\, or on how they are experienced in practice by actors most affected by foundations’ activities – their grantees. SUMMARY:Oligarchs or philanthropists?
DESCRIPTION:Former President Joe Biden warned\, “an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth\, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy\, our basic rights and freedom\, and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead”. Can today’s ‘philanthrocapitalists’ imagine using their resources to uplift wider society? What are the implications when the super-wealthy ignore what 19th century steel magnate Andrew Carnegie called ‘the moral obligations that come with huge wealth?’ and what impact will this have on democracy and society at large?   \n\n\n\nChair: Colin Smyth MSP\, Convener Economy and Fair Work Committee  \n\n\n\nPanellists:   \n\n\n\nProfessor Tobias Jung is a Professor of Management\, University of St Andrews. Tobias is the director and founder of the Centre for the Study of Philanthropy and Public Good.\, Scotland’s first research centre dedicated to the growing field of philanthropy studies. Tobias is co-editor of the international handbook on philanthropy and co-editor of the Global Perspectives on Philanthropy and Public Good Global Perspectives book series\, President of the European Research Network on Philanthropy\, and a trustee of Foundation Scotland\, Scotland’s community foundation.  \n\n\n\nAdam Lang is Director of Policy\, Insight and Advocacy at Carnegie UK. Adam was previously the head of Nesta Scotland and head of policy and communications at Shelter Scotland. Adam sat on the advisory board for data driven innovation at the University of Edinburgh for three years and was an Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) trustee for six. Adam sits on the advisory board for the Scottish Health Equity Research Unit at the University of Strathclyde.   \n\n\n\nJason Boxt is a Principal at RXN in Washington DC. SUMMARY:Towards a Philanthropy for the 21st Century? From Philanthrocapitalism to Relational Philanthropy and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Seminar for the Japan NPO Research Association (JANPORA) by Tobias Jung\nFor over a century\, philanthropy has been on the search for more effective and efficient approaches to giving. Historically\, this journey has ranged from Andrew Carnegie’s idea of ‘scientific philanthropy’\, to recent notions of ‘venture philanthropy’\, ‘entrepreneurial philanthropy’\, and ‘philathrocapitalism’. These approaches\, characterised by their adoption of market motifs and methods\, have significantly shaped recent discourse within the philanthropy field. However\, they have been criticised for their over-emphasis on neoliberal traditions and ideologies. \nIn response\, recent years have seen the emergence of a countermovement. This emphasises beneficiary involvement and user-focused paradigms in philanthropy. Here\, notions such as ‘community philanthropy’\, ‘engaged philanthropy’\, and ‘relational philanthropy’ highlight and emphasise a shift towards more inclusive and relationally driven practices. \nDrawing on ongoing work at the Centre for the Study of Philanthropy & Public Good\, this session will critically explore and interrogate these trends\, their emphases\, opportunities\, and challenges. It will then propose and explore an integrated model of philanthropy as a reflective framework for practitioners and theorists alike\, with the aim to foster a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of\, and approach to\, philanthropic practices that resonate with broader contemporary societal needs.

SUMMARY:Strengthening Community Philanthropy
DESCRIPTION:Spread across multiple settings\, fields and disciplines\, the notion of community philanthropy is appealing and multi-faceted; it presents an ever-changing arrangement of principles\, practices\, patterns and perceptions that cover a diversity of interrelated ideas and ideals. However\, knowledge and understanding of community philanthropy remain emergent; more diversity in views and voices and a better critically reflective synthesis of empirical and theoretical insights are needed. Tobias Jung will discuss how a more decentred approach to understanding community philanthropy can help us address these challenges. In order to strengthen community philanthropy in Europe\, this session explores the community philanthropy ‘kaleidoscope’ as a way to explore\, integrate and reflect on community philanthropy’s diverse facets.

SUMMARY:Exploring UK foundations' grantmaking approaches - Catalyst for Impact
DESCRIPTION:Dr Janis Petzinger will lead a session at the ‘Catalyst for Impact’ charity network event exploring UK foundations’ historic and contemporary grantmaking approaches. She will show how foundations have tackled poverty through different forms of knowledge: a top-down approach\, whereby foundations pull from rationalist\, financialised approaches\, and a bottom-up approach\, where foundations embed themselves locally and use grassroots experiences of a particular area as the departure point for grantmaking approaches. As foundations move towards the latter through community philanthropy\, Janis will use the community philanthropy kaleidoscope as a framing device for practitioners and academics to embrace the complex solutions needed to address localised poverty.

SUMMARY:Exploring relational philanthropy - Mercers Company
DESCRIPTION:Dr Janis Petzinger will present her research on relational philanthropy to the philanthropy team at London’s Mercers Company. Discussing the lexicon of ‘added-value philanthropy’ that resembles a pull between philanthrocapitalism and relational philanthropy\, Dr Petzinger will explore the promises and pitfalls of philanthrocapitalism and financialised philanthropy\, and how the UK foundation world is shifting best practices towards bottom-up trust-based practices. She will conclude with some key lessons for funders\, including: the challenges of integrating trust-based practices\, rethinking social capital through the lease of reciprocity\, and tangibly reframing problematic power dynamics in gift relationships.

SUMMARY:Workshop on Engaged Philanthropy
DESCRIPTION:Janis Petzinger will lead a session on engaged philanthropy. The session\, forming part of this year’s Rank Foundation conference\, will explore how foundations have approached relationships with beneficiaries through history and how organisations are now reframing relationships\, introducing and using a high/low trust versus high/low embeddedness matrix.
