On Thursday, 10th October 2024, Tobias Jung, Professor of Management at the University of St Andrews Business School and Director of the Centre for the Study of Philanthropy & Public Good, gave evidence to the Scottish Parliament’s Social Justice and Social Security Committee regarding its review of the Scottish Government’s third sector funding principles. Areas that the Committee is examining include questions of longer-term and more flexible funding for third sector organisations, as well as issues of inflation, financial stability, transparency, and risk in relation to grantmaking.

Professor Jung highlighted that the questions under consideration were longstanding and well rehearsed, with a relatively clear evidence-base on appropriate actions to move forward. As part of this, he emphasised that meaningful answers would require more clarity on the Government’s strategy and vision for the third sector, and warned about the risks of conflating public and third sector logics and principles in future funding approaches.
