ERNOP’s AGAPE 2024: Charting the Future of Philanthropy Research
Under the provocative theme “Philanthropy Research: Back to the drawing board?”, the European Research Network on Philanthropy’s (ERNOP) A Gathering of Academic research centres and chairs on Philanthropy in Europe (AGAPE) 2024 convened at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna) from 12th-13th September.
Over the two days, opportunities for strengthening organisational capabilities of academic centres were examined, discussions for co-creation of ERNOP’s new strategy took place, and insights on AI in philanthropy research, innovative approaches to philanthropy education, and research integrity were shared. Alongside, the ‘Safe Spaces for Philanthropy’ initiative, co-hosted by ERNOP and Philea, the Philanthropy Europe Association, facilitated meaningful conversations between academic, practice, and policy stakeholders in the philanthropy field.
Professor Tobias Jung, President of ERNOP, and Director of the Centre for the Study of Philanthropy and Public Good (CSPPG) at the University of St Andrews Business School’s Department of Management commented on the meeting, saying:
“ERNOP’s AGAPE meetings are a cornerstone in the philanthropy research calendar. They offer a unique platform for leaders of European research centres and chairs in philanthropy to collectively build and shape the future of our field. This year’s gathering was particularly pivotal, not only in charting ERNOP’s strategic direction but also in laying the groundwork for the ‘Safe Spaces for Philanthropy’ dialogues we will be facilitating at the 2025 conference in Heidelberg.
The great synergy between academia, practice, and policy at AGAPE ensures that our field’s research is relevant, impactful, and capable of enhancing philanthropic efforts across Europe and beyond. It’s truly invigorating to be part of this dynamic community, united in our commitment to strengthening and advancing the understanding and role of philanthropy.”
